What is Boudoir Photography?

A bad place to start when defining boudoir photography is defining the word the word itself. Which is silly I know, but you'll see what I mean...

bou·doir

ˈbo͞oˌdwär/

noun

historical humorous

noun: boudoir; plural noun: boudoirs

  1. a woman's bedroom or private room.

Origin

late 18th century: French, literally ‘sulking place.’

Shall we go one step farther and define sulking? Hell, why not?!

Sulk: be silent, morose, and bad-tempered out of annoyance or disappointment.

So the word boudoir literally means for a woman to sulk in her private room or bedroom. Maybe these sexy photo shoots turned into boudoir out of the pure humor of irony. The modern world is doing a lot for the self esteem of women and these boudoir photos are a beautiful turning point of women empowerment!

Why is taking sexy photos of your self empowering you might ask?

As the viewer, all you see is the final product. You see these beautiful images and probably think "Well that girl is beautiful! I don't look like that though."

Or maybe you think to yourself "How is taking sexy photos so great for my self esteem?"

The process of getting these sexy lingerie pics are not at all what you may think. There has never been a woman that I've photographed that was 100% confident in their body or their ability to be comfortable in front of my camera.

If you're thinking to yourself that these women on my website don't have insecurities, you would be very wrong! Even the most beautiful, thinnest of women still have parts that make them feel insecure. So how is this empowering? These women step out of their comfort zone and decide to love themselves as the are for the day.

And ALWAYS at some point in the shoot a spark appears in their eyes that tells me that they feel the love, the love for their bodies as they are! And that my friend, is a powerful feeling!

To be honest, I feel that the most empowering and beautiful part of boudoir isn't the photos at the end. The most spectacular part is the process that it takes to get to the final product. Even the women who do these sexy photos for their husbands end up feeling the shoot was more for them in the end!

Here's to turning the word Boudoir from sulking alone into women empowerment!!!!
